düşüncenin, duyu verilerini genelleştirmesi ve duyusal bilgiden (dolaysız bilgi) soyut ve zihni bir bilgiye (dolaylı bilgi) varmasıdır.

antipozitivistik, pozitifizm’in temel alınmadığı felsefi anlayıştır. deney ve araştırmalara dayalı sonuçları değil, insani değerlere önem verir. netice olarak insan için "iyi insan" önemlidir.

anima mundi terimi okült terminolojinin bir terimi olup, dünya gezegeninin tümüyle bir canlı varlık olduğu kavramını dile getirmek üzere “dünya canı” anlamında kullanılır. zaten latince’deki iki sözcükten oluşturulmuş terim de sözcük anlamıyla bu anlama gelir. simyacı basilius valentinus’un “dünya ölü bir vücuttan değildir” sözüyle belirttiği anima mundi kavramı okültistlerin ardından teozoflar’ca da kabul görmüştür. bu kavramı kabul eden görüşe göre, insan bedeninde olduğu gibi, anima mundi’nin bedeninde de sinir sistemi, dolaşım sistemleri, solunum sistemi ve çakralar mevcuttur. anima mundi’nin, insan varlığında olduğu gibi, ruh, süptil beden ve maddi beden olarak, üçlü bir yapıya sahip olduğu kabul edilir.

ilkçağ felsefesinde, atomcu demokritos tarafından kurulmuş olan, ünlü temsilcileri arasında kios’lu metrodoros ve anaxarkhos’un bulunduğu adını güney makedonya’daki bir kentten alan okul.

sofist protagaros’ın da doğduğu abdera’da kurulmuş olan felsefe tarihindeki önemini, kurucusu demokritos tarafından savunulmuş olan atomcu görüşten almaktadır. okulun söz konusu materyalist varlık görüşü, empirist bir bilgi anlayışıyla tamamlamış ve abdera okulubu çerçeve içinde, tarihte ilk kezbirinci ve ikincil nitelikler arasında bir ayırım yapılmışır.

galya’nın lugdunum şehrinin (şu anda fransa’da lyon) piskoposuydu. hıristiyan teolojisinin gelişmesine önemli katkıları olmuş, hem ortodoks kilisesi hem de katolik kilisesi tarafından bir aziz olarak tanınmıştır, ortodoks kilisesi onu ayrıca bir kilise babası olarak görür.

smyrna (günümüzde izmir) doğmuş olan ireneyus, aynı şehirden olan polikarp’ın öğrencisidir. polikarp da yuhanna’nın öğrencisiydi.

irenyus’un en önemli yapıtı aykırı düşüncelere karşı (latince adversus haereses) olmuş, burda gnostiklerin görüşlerinin ne mantıkla, ne incil’le ne de havarilerin öğretilerine uyduğunu göstermiştir.
